limelight

gone are the good old days of dancing in front of the drums. gone are the days of kenny kenny talking shit on my outfit and, most notably gone are the outfits on which kenny kenny talked shit.

these days - it's less whoopie, more pies.

tonight i popped into the reincarnation of my high school friday night staple and found a completely different version of the space i so fondly recall.

as far as makeovers go, the limelight marketplace did the best they did could with an icon.  the shops inside are amazing and my favorite place in there so far was Old Hollywood. They have epic designers and the jewelry selection is amazing.

even though it was fun and i bought a few things, i walked out feeling like i mildly betrayed my former patent-leather-thigh-high-platform-boot-and-baby-pink-cowboy hat wearing, cowbell banging, pupil dialating, water chugging self.  everything i can remember from high school that was any fun happened at limelight.  my sister used to take me in and my lame 16 year old world fell away. it was the most fun, most glamourous thing i could have ever imagined. and honestly, since it closed, not much from dusk til dawn has lived up to it.  i was too young for the heydey in the 80s but i think it was pretty badass near the end, too.  i know i had a good time. later on it got turned into avalon, which i went to once and never EVER went back.  it was a worse attempt at reincarnation than if you dug marilyn monroe up from the grave and stuffed her with cotton balls.

this place is a glossy gorgeous shopping mall.  and while it's cool to be able to step inside again, i'd take my version of the limelight back in a second. there are some really good bits in this nymag retrospective done in april.  most of what/when they are talking about is when i was in diapers, but i wish i could have been there.

i am officially a grownup. i guess the city is too.
