dove in the morning

so, at some point in the past two weeks, a bird - which i was told is a mourning dove (thanks brewster!!) - started the makings of a nest in the windowsill next to the air conditioner in Sophie Bird's bedroom.  i assumed it was a ladybird and was sittin on some eggs, but i don't know much about birds so i didn't know for sure.  anyway, day and night, the birdie sat in the window watching over us.  every morning and every night we'd open the shades and say "good morning mama bird" "good night mama bird" etc etc. i didn't think it was a coincidence that a mama bird landed in the window of a girl named Bird, in a room with bird wallpaper (!!) to lay her very own eggs. I like to think she's making sure my lil birdie is ok while i'm sleeping at night.   anyway, this morning we went to say good morning to our new houseguest, and her babies hatched! it was the absolute sweetest thing i've ever seen.  i could see their tiny little wings on the borders of her underbelly and i knew they were there! then she moved for a minute or two and i got a little picture with my phone which just made my day. they're snuggling...

it was a good day.

watermelon.

so basically i have a watermelon in my tummy.  the whole thing's been great (except for the sickness in the beginning and the discomfort towards the end) and i feel like i've been super lucky with this pregnancy.  granted i have nothing to compare it to, but we've both been healthy the whole time (except for that devil flu-respitory infection sick thing i got over xmas/new years), and i've been able to sleep and work and eat (and eat...and eat) and do stuff and be active (well, hail a cab and what not).  The last few weeks have been tough but bearable, and it's almost over (due in 10 days....crazy!), and we're pretty much ready and super excited/anxious/nervous/terrified/amazed that in like, 2 weeks, there will be OUR BABY in the house.  i sincerely have the best husband in the world, who has walked the dogs almost exclusively and changed the cat litter and polished silver and changed lightbulbs through this whole thing, all the while doing silly dances and making me feel like i'm not as big as a house, and never once getting fed up or frustrated with me.  i'm super super duper crazy lucky.  and he's super hot. and smart! booyah! our baby is gonna have one kick-ass pops!

anyway, today, my dear lizzie came over to big mama's house and took some pictures of me + baby, and also some of the animals, and jamie (we can round the # of pics she took to an even 500 or so... insane!) so I can show my child that I wore something OTHER than sweatpants while she was in my tummy.  this is just one she sent me so far, and i will share more soon, including a few pics of the room *which isn't totally finished yet....*, but she's such a super beautiful photographer! i'm so lucky to have a friend who'll take the time out of her sunday to take some pics of my family.

busy bees at the hive

hello again!

i know it's been a while, but i've been busy with work and life and moving and being pregs and eating all the time and what not.  i have had some time to do a bit of handiwork and honestly, i haven't felt this good in a while.  finishing something (even if its just an apple pie - baking, then consequently eating) that i make from scratch with my hands and time is the most satisfying accomplishment i can describe. not for everyone, but it is for me. i get very proud and show it off to my husband who indulges me and constantly calls me clever, which i'm not - but which i love. all i'm doing is what generations of people have done for years and years and years - some with no machines or task lighting or industrial ovens or pastry cutters or itunes. either way, i don't have pictures of everything. but here are 3 things i've been spending the last week on, besides work:

1. my husband, smiley and adorable

2. my animals (Charley, pictured here looking sullen and super emo)

3. a vintage hanky quilt for my neice's past due first birthday

here's a better picture of the hanky quilt:

as you know i am obsessed with made by mosey quilts and while i love to support artists (i did buy one of her mobiles for the baby's room, so i guess we're even), i wanted to make something similar myself for my neice, so i sort of just off the cuff copied it.  since it's a gift, i felt okay about it.  i sincerely hope my brother and his wife don't see this as i haven't given it to them yet.  i really don't think they read my blog so i'm pretty sure i'm safe!

anyway, it was really easy to make, but the difference in textures in the vintage hankerchiefs really made it hard to have everything cut evenly. i did my best, and while there are some imperfections, that's sort of why i like it.

yet another thing my husband wants to keep. i'd better make something for us one of these days!

pump up the volume

my bff lizzie just showed this to me via cuteoverload. and honestly, like, videos DONT make me laugh. this one, however, makes me shake and tremble and i don't know what to do with myself.  i have watched this maybe 10 times and i cannot stop. to me, this is basically the cutest/funniest/most wonderful thing i could have been shown.  note: you must have your volume up to enjoy this at all.

that back left foot is killin' me
